This locket is a box constructed from a sheet of sterling silver, with a handmade hinge on the side, riveted together with sterling wire. A small wire on the inside of the open edge helps it to stay shut, and a small groove cut on the outside helps open it. The front piece is decorated with a technique called granulation. Thin wires and small balls of sterling silver are placed on a piece of sterling and are heated almost to the point of melting, joining them together. The surface has a slightly rough texture from this process.
